… Proprietor Marc Grimaud believes that the best way to learn about wine is to drink wine in a comfortable setting that combines great food, wine and lively conversation.
“There’s no better way to learn about wine and improve your palate and taste memory than to experience a wine dinner in the company of famous winemakers.” That’s been the guiding principle that led Cafe Gabbiano proprietor Marc Grimaud to organize his latest wine dinner, this one specifically devoted to the Malbec wines of Argentina. It happens at Cafe Gabbiano on February 27, starting at 6 p.m. The price is $65 (which includes all wines) for a stellar four-course Italian dinner that will be paired with exquisite and distinctive Malbec wines that have been selected for this special dining experience by winemaker Alejandro Ferllen, who is the owner of the Ferllen Winery in Mendoza, Argentina.
The Ferllen vineyard has been in the family for almost a century. The Malbec grape is particularly suited to the sunlight found in the Andes mountains of Mendoza and today the great Malbec wines are synonymous with Argentina. Malbec is known for its dark fruit flavors and smoky finish. Today, Argentina leads production with over 75% of all the acres of Malbec in the world. Argentina reinvigorated Malbec, once associated with France, as one of the top 18 noble grapes.
Mr. Ferllen will be at the Cafe Gabbiano wine dinner to talk about the history of his internationally famous winery and about the characteristics of the Malbec wines he has paired with Cafe Gabbiano’s Italian specialties. The evening offers opportunities for guests to converse with the winemaker and with one another about the Malbec experience.
The menu is: portobello mushroom cap stuffed with spinach and fontina cheese with a balsamic glaze and crushed red peppers paired with the 2011 Torrontes. This is followed by butternut squash ravioli sautéed with shallot, walnuts, and pine nuts in a butter sauce finished with Parmesan cheese. It’s paired with a 2011 Chardonnay. Next course is scaloppini pan seared with speck, scamorza cheese in a marsala wine sauce with a touch of marinara. This course is paired with the 2009 Malbec Reserva. Dessert is chocolate soufflé that is served with the 2009 Malbec Grand Reserva.
