You are here: / / Customer Celebrates 102nd Birthday at the Sandbar Restaurant
|Can eating Grouper at the Sandbar Restaurant really help you live longer? That is a question Mary Ann Stibbe proposed recently as she and her family gathered at the iconic island restaurant to celebrate her Aunt Vera Richey’s birthday.
Vera has been celebrating her birthday at the Sandbar for many years and this year was no exception. This year was Vera’s 102nd birthday. Joining Mary Ann and Vera was Vera’s younger sister-in-law Lois Richey. Lois is 91. Mary Ann and Lois both emigrated from Canton, Ohio with their husbands (now deceased) to Bradenton nearly 40 years ago. Both ladies have celebrated their birthdays with their families at the Sandbar for many years and they always order and enjoy the freshly caught Grouper.
Each year something special seems to occur. When Vera turned 100 a retired opera singer just happened to be in the dining room with her family. Overhearing the conversation with the wait staff, she sang Happy Birthday to Aunt Vera entertaining Vera and the entire dining room with her beautiful voice. When Vera turned 102 they celebrated the joys of aging at the Sandbar, with a four generation Chinese family who were, they themselves, celebrating their matriarch’s 96th birthday. This year, Sandbar owner Ed Chiles, heard there was a special birthday celebration taking place so he stopped by to wish the ladies Happy Birthday and was asked to take some pictures. Mary Ann told Chiles, “We are looking forward to birthday #103 at the Sandbar and another serendipitous experience.”
Ed Chiles was impressed with Vera’s quick wit and strong handshake. Chiles responded, “Thanks so much for sharing Vera’s most special day with us. It was a great pleasure to be with all of you. We are privileged to participate in making great memories for you and your family and we look forward to continuing to do so for many years to come.”
So whether or not there is any volition to the theory that eating Grouper helps you live longer, one thing for sure – enjoying a delicious meal with your toes in the sand as you look over the Gulf waters has got to make that moment worth living for.
