|Tampa Community, Major Brands Working With The Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers
and Gary Sinise Foundations, Complete New Home
Tampa, FL (Jan. 9, 2014) — Building for America’s Bravest – a joint program of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers and the Gary Sinise Foundations – and its donors including General Electric, Carpet One, Shubert Design Semper Fi Fund, Hope for the Warriors, among others, joins the Tampa community in dedicating a custom designed, specially adapted “Smart Home” for triple amputee USMC Sgt. (Ret.) Michael Nicholson on January 9th, 2014 at 10:00 am. The new home is located at 6321 Interbay Avenue, Tampa.
After eight months of construction, the keys and iPad used to manage the Smart Home will be turned over to Sgt. Nicholson. The dedication ceremony will consist of a one-hour program with speakers from the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the Gary Sinise Foundation, Philanthropist Mrs. Veronica Atkins, Carpet One and other special guests. The general public is welcome to attend.
On July 6, 2011 Sgt. Nicholson was on combat foot patrol when he was injured by an improvised explosive devise (IED) in Afghanistan, causing him to lose both legs and his left arm and suffer a traumatic brain injury.
“I’m truly blessed that the Tampa community and all of these organizations have joined together to provide more independence in my new Smart Home,” said Sgt. Michael Nicholson. “I’m looking forward to easier accessibility throughout the house with things such as hardwood floors, which make it easier for me to get around. I sincerely want to thank the Tampa community as well as the Tunnel to Towers and the Gary Sinise Foundations.”
“We are proud to honor Mike Nicholson’s heroism. By providing this custom Smart Home, he will be able to live a more independent lifestyle which will, in turn, enable him to lead the best life possible,” said Gary Sinise. “He has given so much. It is a privilege to be able to give something back. I want to thank Veronica Atkins for her instrumental role in this project, and everyone who came to our concert last year to help raise funds to make this day possible. But most of all, we thank Sgt. Michael Nicholson for his service and sacrifice in defense of our nation. Thank you Mike, and welcome home.”
Adds Frank Siller, Chairman of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, “We thank the wonderful citizens of Tampa and those across the country who have sent donations, as well as those who attended the benefit concert to help make this home possible for Mike. Thanks to their generosity, we are able to give Mike a place he can call home.”
