Thursday, January 9, 2014 Wauchula, Fla. — Operation Round Up, the charitable foundation of Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO), is now accepting college scholarship applications. A total of $45,000 in scholarships will be awarded to 10 qualified students in 2014. Since 2006, Operation Round Up has provided over $360,000 in scholarship aid.
Graduating high school seniors seeking a college degree and even adults desiring to further their education or gain new job skills may apply. Applicants must reside in a home served by PRECO. The Wauchula-based cooperative serves 10 central Florida counties: Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Indian River, Manatee, Osceola, Polk and Sarasota.
“For many aspiring students, college is out of reach financially without the assistance of scholarship funds,” shares Julian ‘Tip’ Tharp, board president of Operation Round Up. “Our goal is to make our local community a better place by supporting the leaders of tomorrow.”
The scholarship application is available at high school guidance offices or on PRECO’s website at www.preco.coop. The deadline for completed applications is March 1, 2014.
Operation Round Up collects voluntary donations from its members for community charitable uses. Participating consumers have their electric bills ‘rounded up’ to the next dollar to provide charitable funds in the areas of food, shelter, clothing, medical, environmental, and education.
