St. Petersburg, FL. Jan. 6, 2013: St. Petersburg Preservation’s walking tours continue as the winter tourist season kicks into swing! Tours are offered every Saturday through April.
Saturday, Jan. 18 – George Snow Hill & the St. Petersburg Coast Guard Station Walking Tour – George Snow Hill, a 1930’s artist, with paintings found at St. Petersburg City Hall and Tampa International Airport also has a set of murals at the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Bayboro Harbor. These murals were installed when the base was rebuilt by the WPA in 1935. The base was originally commissioned in 1924 and its boats were used to patrol against smuggling operations associated with prohibition. Tour participants will visit the historic base buildings, see the George Snow Hill murals and tour a present day Coast Guard cutter. Reservations required, space on tour limited, cost $5 for SPP members & $10 for non-members. Tour starts at 12:30, call 727 463 4612 for reservations.
Saturday, Jan. 25 & Feb. 22 – Westward Ho to Historic Kenwood Walking Tour – Tour starts & ends at Craftsman House Gallery, 2955 Central Ave., the 1918 model home for the neighborhood. Start time 10 am. Tour participants will take a leisurely stroll thru Kenwood, the premiere historic bungalow neighborhood, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and primarily constructed between 1912 and the start of World War II. The neighborhood retains its historic character with over 90% of its homes being over 50 years old. The tour includes a stop in a restored bungalow. Cost is free to SPP members & $5 for non-members.
Saturday, Feb. 1 – “Original” Downtown Walking Tour – Within downtown St. Petersburg is a National Register Historic District and a wonderful collection of historic buildings ranging from the city’s unique open air post office to its stately churches and 1920’s boom era hotels. This tour focuses on the best of the city’s architecture, lending
the city its special sense of place. Tour participants will learn about the city’s history and get a special “insider” look at one of the city’s historic gems Tour starts at 10 am in front
of Café del Mar at 243 Central Ave, tour is free to SPP members & is $5 for non-members.
Friday, Feb. 7 – Downtown Lunch Time Walking Tour – Take an hour stroll thru downtown with preservationist Emily Elwyn while enjoying her keen insight on the ‘Burg’s history & architecture! Tour starts at noon and will follow the growth of the city, stopping
at churches, hotels and some of the city’s great civic buildings. Tour begins in front of Café del Mar at 243 Central Ave. and is free to SPP members and is $5 for non-members.
Saturday, Feb. 8 – Waterfront Walking Tour – Learn about the civic visionaries who transformed St. Petersburg’s working waterfront into one of the largest waterfront park systems in the country, see some of the best of the past side by side with some of the newest in architecture. The tour begins at the Saturday Morning Market on 1st Street S. At 2nd Ave. (under the trees just north of the Market music stage). Tour starts at 10 am and is free to SPP members and is $5 for others.
