TAMPA, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2013) – Known as Tampa’s Latin Quarter for more than a century, Ybor City is always alive with an exotic blend of aromas, flavors, sights and sounds, but never more so than during the month-long celebration known as “Flavors of Ybor.” Throughout the month of February, visitors can explore and experience Tampa’s historic Ybor City through a dazzling line-up of events and happenings. To follow is a sampling of some of the major events and activities.
On Feb. 8, spectators of all ages take to the streets – 7th Avenue, to be exact – for the Krew of Knights of Sant’ Yago Knight Parade. The largest parade of its kind in the Southeast, the procession includes illuminated floats, costumed participants, marching bands, dancers, beads and more. The approximately two-hour long parade winds its way from Nuccio Parkway to 22nd Avenue.
Started as a day of rest for immigrant cigar workers, Fiesta Day is celebrated Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with ethnic food, exhibits, entertainment and traditional arts and crafts. A free, family-oriented event, Fiesta Day takes place along 7th Avenue, which is open to pedestrian-traffic only during the event.
Also on Feb. 22, Flan Fest features more than 40 contestants competing for the title of Top Flan in Tampa Bay. The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centennial Park in the outdoor Ybor City Saturday Market.
At Gaspar’s Grotto, the annual Fat Tuesday Crawfish Boil begins at 4 p.m. Serving an abundance of spicy crawfish, potatoes, corn and more, this annual tradition marks the last night to eat richer, fatty foods before the ritual of fasting for the start of the Lenten season.
