St. Petersburg, FL. December 19, 2013: St. Petersburg Preservation’s walking tours continue for the winter season in 2014. Tours include a Saturday morning tour, offered each Saturday through April. Tours are free to St. Petersburg Preservation members, $5 if not a member. Tours change each Saturday of the Month. The first Saturday tour is the “Original” downtown tour; the second Saturday is the Waterfront tour; the third Saturday is a historic neighborhood tour (neighborhoods may vary); and the fourth Saturday is the Historic Kenwood tour. Friday, Jan. 3 – First Friday Downtown Lunch Time Walking Tour – Take an hour stroll thru downtown with preservationist Emily Elwyn while enjoying her keen insight on the ‘Burg’s history & architecture! Tour starts at noon and will follow the growth of the city, stopping at churches, hotels and some of the city’s great civic buildings. Tour starts in front of Café del Mar at 243 Central Ave.
Saturday, Jan. 4 – “Original” Downtown Walking Tour – Tourgoers will see some of the best of the city’s architecture while learning about the city’s history from the coming of the Orange Belt Railroad, through the 1920’s boom & bust to the rise & fall of the city’s trademark green benches. The tour will note preservation success stories like the restored Pennsylvania Hotel and also include a special “insider” stop in one of the city’s gems. Tour starts in front of Café del Mar at 243 Central Ave.
Saturday, Jan. 11 – Waterfront Walking Tour – Learn about the civic visionaries who transformed the ‘Burg’s working waterfront into one of the largest waterfront park systems in the country, see some of the best of the past side by side with some of the newest in architecture. Tour starts beside the Saturday Morning Market on 1st Street & 2nd Ave. S. (near the Market music stage), which makes a great place to get coffee and to find a tasty snack or breakfast before the tour.
