A week of Toastmasters open house meetings throughout Sarasota County culminates with free public programs at two centrally located public library branches on Saturday, January 18, 2014.
[December 19, 2013 – Sarasota, FL] Sarasota County-based Toastmasters clubs will sponsor the Southwest Florida Week of Public Speaking: Say it with CONFIDENCE from January 13 to January 18, 2014. During the week of January 13, each Toastmasters club will host a special Open House meeting at its regular time, day, and location. The week will culminate on Saturday, January 18, in day-long events at the Selby and Jacaranda branches of the Sarasota County Library system, with programming designed to help everyone who has any occasion to speak in front of a group, whether business-related or not.
“We’ll have programs for professionals and volunteers, for businesses and non-profits, for young people and adults,” says Liz Coursen, president of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Toastmasters Club. “The entire week is designed to help people—whatever their ages or experiences—overcome their fear of speaking in public.”
Coursen knows about being afraid to speak in public.
“Back in ninth grade I ran for president of Pine View School,” she says. “I had a great speech. I had practiced in front of the mirror. I had practiced in front of my mother. I mounted the stage with the calm certainty that I would soon be president of Pine View. And then, and then I fell apart. I started to stutter. I started to stammer. My knees shook. I began to sweat. Those awful moments haunted me for years.”
Today, Coursen is a professional speaker, speaking more than 100 times a year all over the country. She credits the change to joining Toastmasters International.
“Toastmasters is a warm, supportive environment of people who come together on a regular basis with the sole purpose of helping one another improve their ability to speak in public,” she says. “There are seven clubs involved in this Week of Public Speaking, and each club designed and executed its own event.”
