The name and look might be different, but the essence of this popular community festival remains the same. Formerly known as Ovation, the new Grand Ovation at Lakewood Ranch is in the planning stages for its seventh annual festival – a singular combination of street fair and outdoor performing arts hall. The purpose of Grand Ovation remains the same also – to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultural treasures of Southwest Florida, to promote local non-profit groups, and to provide a fun day of music, food, shopping and more for all who attend.
Grand Ovation will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1st, in its traditional location along Main Street in downtown Lakewood Ranch. Drawing on the success of past events, organizers are planning to showcase performances from a variety of local school groups, professional musicians, dancers, chorus groups, drama teams and more. Now is the time for such groups to submit an application to participate in this year’s festival. Applications are available online at www.lakewoodranch.com/grandovation or at the SMR headquarters at 14400 Covenant Way in Lakewood Ranch. The application deadline is Jan. 1st, 2014.
Organizers are also actively seeking event sponsors. Grand Ovation at Lakewood Ranch is the only event of its kind in Southwest Florida and draws attendees from the Tampa Bay area as well as points south towards Naples and Fort Myers. Officials estimate that more than 3,000 people turned out for the 2013 festival, and they are expecting to exceed that number this year. Grand Ovation was founded by and is supported by LWR Communities.
As a community-wide celebration of cultural arts, Grand Ovation at Lakewood Ranch is a free event, both for attendees and participants. There are no parking or admission fees, and all the shops and restaurants along Main Street will be open. There is no charge for non-profit groups to participate in the event, and each will receive a designated table where they can advertise upcoming seasons, sell tickets for future events, and recruit new members and patrons.
Highlights from last year’s festival included two performance stages with entertainment provided by the Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Manatee Players, Lakewood Ranch High School Silver Stars dance team, Florida Studio Theatre, The Players, Sarasota Dance Academy, and many more.
