Tampaʼs Storytelling Speaker series, “The Travelogues”, Turns One
Tampa, FL — Tampaʼs art and travel community will gather on Friday, January 3, 2014 from 7 – 10 p.m. to celebrate the first anniversary of the storytelling speaker series, The Travelogues, with seven speakers, travel photography, birthday treats, and more in Creative Loafingʼs CL Space, located at 1911 N. 13th Street in Ybor City.
The Traveloguesʼ aim to bring the community together through shared travel experience has been a great success in its first year. By the night of this first anniversary celebration (Fri. January 3, 2014), the series will have had 14 events, 33 local speakers, and over 550 attendees over the course of the year. That is too many travel stories, laughs, and collective experiences to count.
The first anniversary party will include seven speakers, all being previous Travelogues presenters or attendees. Speakers include Mitzi Gordon, who has shared her attempt to relocate to L.A. and details of revisiting after having left, James and Julie Branaman, who previously shared stories and images from their Rocky Mountain National Park artist-in- residency, Josh Sullivan has shared stories of visiting nearly all the states for his ʻ52 Friendsʼ travel project, Victoria Hawley shared her experiences of visiting and protesting the killing of marine animals in Japan, Jeremy Gloff has been an attendee and longtime Travelogues supporter, Katie Marie and Eric Turner have shared stories of revisiting Kazakhstan after participating in the Peace Corps, and Justin Arnold has shared stories of visiting Peru and nearly drowning in the Amazon River. All speakers will present briefly and share one of their favorite travel stories throughout the evening.
The Bluebird Books Bus will be in attendance with travel-related literature and ephemera in tow. Birthday treats will be made with love by Cafe Hey. The walls of the space will be filled with travel photography from local photographers. Every attendee will be offered a raffle ticket with their $5 admission and will have the chance to win a hot air balloon earrings and necklace set from Superfantastic! by Julie in honor of The Traveloguesʼ well known hot air balloon illustration on its original poster, or Travelogues-themed merchandise. There will also be special announcements made during this evening in relation to the changes that will be made to the series in the new year.
Admission in advance is $5. Day of admission is $7. Admission can be purchased via http://www.tampatravelogues.com.
The Travelogues began in January 2013 with the intention of giving members of the community the opportunity to share travel stories. The Travelogues were started by Gina Moccio, and stem from the interview and event project, Vessel (vesselcollective.com). Moccio has been interested in travel since high school, and after studying abroad in college, was looking for a platform to connect with other travel bugs, globetrotters, and couchsurfers. Today, her reincarnation of the speaker series lives on brightly with wonderful local speakers sharing travel stories from distinct and unique places. Any community member is welcome to attend and if interested, be considered as a future speaker for the series.
