YBOR CITY, Fla., Nov. 25, 2013 – The 12th Annual “Richard’s Run for Life” 5K raised $100,000, with 100 percent going to the Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) Program for sarcoma research at Moffitt Cancer Center. The race took place on Friday, Nov. 1, in Ybor City’s Centennial Park.
“We want to thank the 2,000 runners, walkers, volunteers, supporters and sponsors who joined us in our quest to find better treatments to combat cancer and one day have a cure,” said Richard Gonzmart, 4th generation family member and president of Columbia Restaurant Group. “I feel that our run and other events like it give patients battling cancer and their families hope … hope that we will find that cure soon. I believe Moffitt and other cancer centers are making great progress each day.”
Richard Gonzmart was inspired to create this race to celebrate those fighting and surviving cancer, people such as Josalyn Kaldenberg, who at 9 was the first pediatric cancer patient in the United States to have her entire upper arm bone replaced with one made of chrome and titanium. Josalyn’s surgery was performed by Moffitt’s Dr. Doug Letson, and she is now doing well and once again playing the piano.
