Exhibit Offered in Partnership with Creative Clay’s ArtLink Project
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Nov. 19, 2013) – Award-winning mixed media artist Rose Marie Prins is the featured artist at The Mahaffey Theater’s second floor Atrium Gallery through Feb. 14.
Prins is among a group of professional artists with Creative Clay Cultural Arts Center’s ArtLink Supported Employment Program. Her work is displayed as result of a partnership between Creative Clay and The Mahaffey Theater.
Ms. Prins’ exhibit, The East Coast Years, 1996 to 2013, is a retrospective of selected works she created after moving from the Southwest to the East Coast. It features works from the series, Bound Crosses and Boundary Crossings, exploring her African roots; War and Peace and the Height in Between, inspired by a poem by American poet Timothy Houghton, and a series began in 2012, Terra Firma, works that incorporate soil from various locations in the United States.
Curtia James of the Richmond-Times Dispatch wrote, “Prins’ mixed media works probe the notions of trauma and healing, destruction and rebirth. She slashes or burns her canvases, then repairs the wounds with wire stitches…”
Prins has exhibited in her native country, South Africa, and throughout the United States. She has taught painting, drawing, sculpture and mixed media in numerous institutions in the Tampa Bay area including Ringling College of Art and Design, Eckerd College, Hillsborough Community College and the Morean Arts Center during the past 10 years. Her work can be viewed at www.rosemarieprins.com.
An artist’s reception for The East Coast Years, 1996 to 2013, free and open to the public, is scheduled 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3. The Mahaffey Theater is located in downtown St Petersburg, 400 First St. S.
