The Eckerd College Writers’ Conference: Writers in Paradise is pleased to announce the 2014 Keynote Speaker will be National Book Award winner, Tim O’Brien (The Things They Carried).
Tim O’Brien received the National Book Award in Fiction in 1979 for his novel, Going After Cacciato. In 2005, the New York Times named The Things They Carried as one of the 22 best books of the last quarter century. It received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award in fiction and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The French edition of The Things They Carried received one of France’s highest literary awards, the Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger. The title story from The Things They Carried received the National Magazine Award and was selected by John Updike for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories of the Century. In the Lake of the Woods, published in 1994, was chosen by Time magazine as the best novel of that year. The book also received the James Fenimore Cooper Prize from the Society of American Historians and was selected as one of the ten best books of the year by the New York Times. In 2010, O’Brien received the Katherine Anne Porter Award, presented by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, for a distinguished lifetime body of work. In 2012, O’Brien received the Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award from the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation. In 2013, O’Brien received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Pritzker Military Library.
Week-long, intensive workshops will be led by Andre Dubus III (Nonfiction), Ann Hood (Novel), Laura Lippman (Novel), Danielle Trussoni (Novel), Sterling Watson (Novel), Les Standiford (Screenwriting), Stewart O’Nan (Short Story), and Laura Williams McCaffrey (Young Adult Writing).
Individual lectures on craft will be taught by Tim O’Brien, Attica Locke, and Sterling Watson.
Additional special guests include: Jon Chopan (author), Lisa Gallagher (literary agent), Diane Les Becquets (MFA Program Director), Peter Meinke (author), Lori Roy (author), and Johnny Temple (publisher and editor).
Conference events also include: roundtable session with workshop faculty, student readings, evening readings by our faculty, evening receptions, craft luncheon hosted by low-residency MFA program, panel on agenting, editing and publishing, beginnings, scenic boat ride on Tampa Bay (weather permitting) and more.

· Friday, December 13, 2013 – Confirmation of Attendance, Final Balance of Payment, Manuscript to be workshopped, Due.
· Wednesday, December 18 – Manuscripts Distributed
· Application Fee: $25 (If you are accepted, we apply the application fee to the conference fee balance)
· Conference Fee for 2013: $700
· Special Housing at the Magnuson Hotel: $70 (per night based on single occupancy).
This room rate includes all applicable taxes. It does not include a meal plan. There will be a complimentary shuttle provided by the College which will run between the hotel and College at designated times per the conference schedule of events. If you are traveling to the conference with another accepted participant, you may arrange to split the cost of the room fee. All reservations will be handled through the conference coordinator. Scholarships are available based on need and merit, as determined by the conference directors. Funds will be awarded in $100 increments (not to exceed $700). There are also four, full tuition scholarships available. Please see our website for details.
