The Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park are looking for new members and some fresh faces on its governing board. The organization will be holding its annual membership meeting on November 14 at 6 p.m. in the park’s Banquet Hall.
The Friends group is a non-profit Citizens Support Organization (CSO) devoted to fund-raising to supplement state budgets for the park. There are more than 200 members now. Friends President Denise Tenuto would like to see the membership expanded, especially with people who have an appreciation for our local state park and are interested in volunteering and raising money for park improvements.
Right now state officials are finalizing a master plan for the park’s development aimed at highlighting the park’s traditional attractions with 21st century improvements. The Friends organization is expected to play a big role in helping make those improvements happen.
Tenuto obtained donations and contributions from local sponsors and a matching grant for the new landscaping at the park entrance. Sylvia Durell, Director, also obtained a grant to offset the cost of educational signage for the project. The group hopes it is just the latest in a long series of projects to enhance the park.
The Friends are also seeking a few members interested in serving on the CSO Board of Directors. The board meets once a month, reviews the status of current projects, and works with park management on plans and improvements, including fundraising events for the park. The Friends are looking for potential board members with professional and technical expertise in areas such as fundraising, architectural design, grant-writing, marketing and landscape design. The Treasurer is leaving the board and the group is seeking someone, preferably with a background and interest in bookkeeping or accounting, to fill the position.
Anyone interested in membership can find information on joining the Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs State Park at the park entrance gate or on the Friends’ website at http://friendsofweekiwachee.com/
