Event to benefit Moffitt Cancer Center and All Children’s Hospital
TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2013) — The 6th Annual Cure on Wheels Bike Challenge will be held Nov. 10 at Flatwoods Park, 14302 Morris Bridge Road, Thonotosassa. Proceeds from the Cure on Wheels Bike Challenge will benefit cancer treatment and research efforts at Moffitt Cancer Center and All Children’s Hospital.
The event features rides for all levels of fitness, including a seven-mile family fun ride within Flatwoods Park, a 25-mile “Tour de Moffitt” ride to and from the cancer center; a 62-mile “Metric Century” ride; and a 100-mile century ride through the hills of Pasco County. “Virtual” riders can join the fun, raise money and join the festivities without cycling.
Cure on Wheels riders solicit contributions and receive cycling gear and other premiums for meeting fundraising milestones. Individuals, businesses, churches and other groups can also form teams to ride and meet fundraising goals together.
Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor will serve as Grand Marshal of the 2013 Cure on Wheels Bike Challenge.
At 8:45 a.m., Castor will deliver a pre-race pep talk to the riders in the 62-mile Metric Century event. Castor will also count down to the start of the race and send the riders on their way.
The Metric Century event will include a team from the Tampa Bay Lightning led by Dave Andreychuk, former Stanley Cup Champion and current VP for business development. The Tampa Police Department joins the Lightning and other community organizations fielding teams of cyclists at Cure on Wheels this year.
“Cure on Wheels riders will experience a Tour de France-like atmosphere as they finish their rides with food, fun and live entertainment for all,” said Richard Spayde, Cure on Wheels organizer and cancer survivor. “Anyone who participates is sure to be inspired by what can be accomplished when we pull together to fight cancer.”
Community members are encouraged to support the Cure on Wheels challenge by riding in the event, donating to riders or volunteering. For information about Cure on Wheels, visit www.cureonwheels.org.
