October 18, 2013 – Sarasota, FL – Ringling College of Art and Design today announced the launch of the fifth season of the college’s popular Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab with the arrival of actor Justin Long on November 2nd. In addition to Justin Long, new artists slated to participate in the Digital Filmmaking Studio lab this season include Roman Coppola, Luke Wilson and Matt Dillon, with Anna Pacquin, Werner Herzog and Forrest Whitaker returning this year. Mr. Long came to Ringling College last year with Sam Rockwell and is now returning to teach and collaborate with Ringling on a wide range of projects.
“I am very much looking forward to returning to the Ringling Film Lab,” said Mr. Long. “I think their approach of working directly with and learning from filmmakers is exactly what students need and I am eager to impart as much as I can in that regard. Considering the drive and passion that I’ve already seen these students exhibit, I’m sure I’ll end up being much more inspired by them than they by me. Either way, it’ll be fun.”
Justin has built up an impressive body of work since beginning with Vassar College’s comedy troupe, ‘Laughingstock’. He recently wrapped the feature film ‘Comet’, opposite Emmy Rossum and just signed on to star in the Christmas 2013 release of ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ for Fox. His film credits include ‘Galaxy Quest’, ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’; ‘Waiting…’, ‘Herbie Fully Loaded’, with Lindsay Lohan; ‘The Break-Up’; ‘Accepted’, with Jonah Hill and Blake Lively; ‘Idiocracy’; ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, alongside Bruce Willis; ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’; Sam Raimi’s ‘Drag Me to Hell’; Judd Apatow’s ‘Funny People’; ‘Youth in Revolt’; Robert Redford’s ‘The Conspirator’; ‘Ten Year’; and ‘Going the Distance’, opposite Drew Barrymore.
Justin has done extensive voiceover work, including all three ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ movies; guest appearances on the television series ‘King of the Hill’; and a lead role in the recent animated television series ‘Unsupervised’. His television work includes costarring in the series ‘Ed’ and a guest arc last season opposite Zooey Deschanel on ‘New Girl’. He also recently starred on Broadway opposite Jeff Goldblum in Theresa Rebeck’s comedy ‘Seminar’. Justin also played Steve Jobs in Funny or Die’s internet film ‘iSteve.’ Mr. Long is producing the upcoming feature ‘A Case of You’ with Evan Rachel Wood, Keir O’Donnell, Busy Philipps, and Peter Dinklage. He also just announced a new show for NBC in which he’s writing, producing and starring with Modern Family director Jason Winer at the helm.
“The Digital Filmmaking Studio Lab has evolved over the past four years into a sustainable and collaborative partnership between film industry luminaries and Ringling College and its students,” stated Ringling College president Dr. Larry R. Thompson. “We are pleased to have Justin come to work with our students after his visit with Sam Rockwell last season. We have already established ongoing working relationships with Werner Herzog and Forrest Whitaker and look forward to announcing more throughout the season.”
“We have moved from artists simply visiting Ringling to talk with students to developing some very innovative and collaborative partnerships with Hollywood’s new guard,” said Studio Lab cofounder and program director David Shapiro. “We are providing vital and exciting opportunities for Ringling students and are working to develop and produce projects that draw upon the full palette of talent available at Ringling College above and beyond filmmaking, including set design, branding, advertising, graphic and motion design and computer animation. Our goal is to create collaborative relationships were we co-realize successful projects with leading film artists.”
Anna Paquin’s film, ‘Free Ride’, which was shot in part at historic Sarasota High School, the future home of the Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA), provided on-set opportunities for Ringling College students in multiple disciplines and in addition editing of the film was done at Ringling College.
