(SARASOTA, Fla, October 17, 2013) The third Protecting Your Intellectual Property Workshop “Patents and the Patent Process,” will be held on Thursday, November 7, at USFSM, 8350 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The workshop is co-sponsored by Manasota SCORE (www.manasota.score.org) and USF Sarasota-Manatee College of Business (www.usfsm.edu).
The program will feature a presentation by patent attorney and innovation expert Joseph L. Long, of Long Technology Law with offices in Sarasota and Atlanta.
Long will address the decision to pursue patent protection, including evaluating the pros and cons, expenses, barriers, market testing, and international business considerations.
The presentation will cover issues that typically arise in an entrepreneur’s first meeting with a patent attorney, including whether a new technology is patentable and whether it may infringe on an existing patent. It will also cover strategy considerations and examples from electronic and computer arts.
Attendees will learn what it means to be patentable over existing art in the field and where the boundaries are between patent law and protections for other types of intellectual property, copyrights and trademarks
The workshop is free, but registration is requested and recommended, as there will be limited seating. The program begins at 9:30 a.m., with sign-in and hospitality beginning at 9 a.m. Register online at www.manasota.score.org.
