TREASURE ISLAND, FL — Some of the biggest names in competitive kite flying, including Gary Engvail, nationally known for flying the big kites, and Maggie Engvail, American Kitefliers Association Region 1 Director and Event Judge, are available for interviews and demonstrations at a media availability before this weekend’s “Fall Fly at T.I.” competition.
The media event will take place throughout the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 18, on the sand behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort in Treasure Island, where competition takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
Also appearing will be Revolution Kites co-founder Dave Hadzicki; Tony Jetland of Prism Kites; Ross Mozier from Central Florida Kite Flyers, and Pete Dolphin from Cape Coral with his Flying Flo Tail kites. Terry Murray from Kitebus will MC, and Gary Resnick with the Treasure Island Sport Kite Klub (TISKK) will be doing candy drops all weekend.
Following the media availability on Friday, there will be an illuminated night kite fly, a visually intoxicating event, and a meet-and-greet at the Thunderbird Beach Resort Tiki Bar. Members of the media are invited.
The two-day kite flying competition runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. But the free event is especially geared toward novices and families and is a great opportunity to experience competitive kite flying. There will be sport kites, aerial photography rigs, single-line kites, revs, banners and ground displays along with kids’ activities, food and drink vendors and raffles.
