Bradenton, Florida October, 2013 – Sarbona Academy is Manatee County’s newest and most effective private school serving children in grades 6-12th. The Chamber hosted a ribbon-cutting on October 10th though school has been in session since September 3rd.
Seeing a need for more valuable and personalized education, Sarbona Academy was founded and is operated by experienced classroom teachers. With open enrollment in the full-time or part-time schedule, Sarbona Academy offers both core and elective classes to domestic and international students. Sarbona Academy offers an easy application process, Step Up for Students scholarships, open enrollment, McKay scholarships, and transferable credits.
Sarbona Academy is unlike any other middle/high school experience in the area. Because each student’s learning needs are different, each course experience is tailored to suit his/her personal and academic goals. These goals are determined by the diagnostics and assessments BEFORE students are assigned class schedules. Using brain-based methods like Katherine Nunley’s Layered curriculum and Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory, students’ strengths are determined and they are offered choices that naturally appeal to those strengths. The Personal Learning Plan (PLP) is created and agreed upon by the parent, student, and teachers and lessons and assessments reflect that plan.
Sarbona Academy is made up of diverse learners, including gifted, challenged, home-schooled, ESL, AP, post graduates, international students, and students that require flexible schedules (athletes). Because EVERY child has a PLP, EVERY child is truly identified as unique and special – no more labels or stigmas!!!! Truly, every child is given the individual attention he/she needs to be successful and equip for the 21st Century.
Sarbona Academy does offer online courses but the experience is a guided one by content experts. Mentors are experts in their discipline and facilitate education that promotes mastery of skills in each course, thus allowing students to truly earn success. Sarbona Academy mentors are instructors that create, assess, and revise their coursework as needed. Different than other schools, Sarbona Academy requires that students meet with their mentors throughout the entire time they are taking the class. Parents, students, and mentors agree upon an academic plan for each child based on is/her child’s identified learning strengths and skill level. This academic plan is monitored by the director and adjustments are made as deemed necessary by all involved.
