Oct. 25 Fundraiser Supports Cultural Arts Programming
at The Mahaffey Theater
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2013) – Cuban-born international superstar Jon Secada, an exclusive cigar rolling experience, delicious Cuban cuisine and signature tropical drinks are among the hot ingredients of Hot Havana Night, a benefit for the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts, Inc. scheduled 7-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25.
The sizzling fundraiser will transform the lobby and Atrium of The Mahaffey into a tropical paradise. The Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts supports The Mahaffey’s cultural arts programming that includes the Class Acts performance series for school children, which brings international, national and regional guest artists to the community.
The curriculum-based program for K-12 students teaches language arts, history, world culture, science and math as well as values of character, critical thinking, respect and discipline concepts that extend beyond the classroom.
Tickets are $50 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at www.TheMahaffey.com, charge by phone at 727.893.7832 or in person at The Mahaffey Box Office. Box office hours are 11am-5pm Monday-Saturday or at least 90 minutes prior to any ticketed event.
Hot Havana Night features entertainment by the two-time Grammy® winner Secada, who began his career as a former background singer for Gloria Estefan, and up-and-coming piano rockers, The Dan Orlando Band.
Secada recently released his latest single and music video, “I’m Never Too Far Away,” which is currently climbing the Billboard Magazine Adult Contemporary chart.
More than two decades ago Secada co-wrote and sang on “Coming Out of the Dark,” Gloria’s No. 1 hit from her 1991 album Into the Light. Within a year, he went solo, scored with his soulful melodic voice and writing of ballads in both English and Spanish and became a star in his own right.
Secada has sold more than 20 million albums and has written and produced numerous songs and No. 1 hits for artists such as Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin. His music fuses funk, soul, pop and Latin percussion in one sound.
Most of Secada’s songs share a theme: The exploration of loss and the hope that can exist within that loss. Songs include: “Just Another Day,” a Billboard Top 5 pop hit, “Angel,” a Billboard Top 10 pop hit, “Do You Believe in Us,” “If You Go,” “Too Late too Soon,” “Same Dream” and “Someday.”
Other activities based on the Hot Havana theme include a cigar rolling table, Cuban food stations, drink specials, opportunity drawings for prizes and performances by Fred Astaire Dance Studio. A cash bar will be available.
