|September Shines Light on Sickle Cell Disease Awareness
(St. Petersburg, FL September 19, 2013) Like many 9-year-old boys, Sir Donovan Green enjoys riding his bike and playing video games, but once a month he has to receive a blood transfusion. Like many African Americans, Sir Donavan suffers from Sickle cell disease, which affects some 100 thousand people. In addition, more than 2 million people carry the sickle cell gene that could potentially be passed onto their children.
During September, Sickle Cell Awareness Month, education focuses on sufferers like 9-year-old Sir Donovan Green, who receives regular red blood transfusions to sustain his life. OneBlood, the local blood center, provides blood to patients like Sir Donavan and appeals to people to give blood regularly to help millions of others who also need blood transfusions. Below is video news release information for stories, video and sound bites about Sickle Cell awareness.
