|Dr. Brian Foster of The Eye Associates is now able to offer relief to those with dry eye symptoms, but who are actually suffering from a condition called conjunctivochalasis or CCH. CCH is often misdiagnosed as dry eye disease because the symptoms are very similar. The treatments that are effective for dry eyes, such as drops, ointments and even prescription medications do not resolve CCH.
The area of concern is between the eye and the eyelid. It is a thin clear layer of tissue called conjunctiva. The conjunctiva acts like a pocket that holds a reservoir of tears, which keeps the eyes lubricated and comfortable. For some people, this tissue can loosen and wrinkle with age, disrupting the normal process of keeping the eyes healthy with tears. A breakthrough use of amniotic membrane tissue has been discovered to help correct this problem. Dr Foster removes the excess conjunctival tissue and replaces it with an amniotic membrane tissue graft that adheres without stitches. The amniotic membrane has a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring property that actively promotes the healing process and reduces discomfort after surgery. Smooth, healthy conjunctiva replaces the amniotic membrane graft in just a few days. After the ocular surface is restored, patients can expect improvement in dryness and irritation. Dr. Foster noted, “Patients that thought that dry eye disease was their problem are finally getting relief with this quick procedure. It is amazing how much more comfortable the eye is afterwards.”
