SARASOTA, FL – Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, Inc. celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, September 16th 2013 at 10 AM – 11:30 AM. The ribbon cutting ceremony was officiated by the Manatee and Sarasota Chamber of Commerce networks to commemorate the grand opening of the newly remodeled Selby School Building and the opening of The Selby School – a private McKay Scholarship school for eligible students in kindergarten and grades 9 – 12 on their serene, 32-acre campus located at 4405 DeSoto Road off University Parkway. Senator John M. McKay, Florida Senate President in 2000-2002 and visionary behind the McKay Scholarship Program for students with disabilities; Dr. Sarah H. Pappas, President of the William G. & Marie Selby Foundation and Carolyn J. Mason, Chair of the Sarasota County Commissioners were special guest speakers.
The former Selby Day School Building circa 1968−a 4,000 square foot re-purposed building remodeled by Half Acre Construction−is now home to state-of-the-art classrooms and the Fry Family Foundation Technology Center, staff offices, an upscale resale store and The Fry Family Foundation Athletic Pavilion for basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard and other recreational activities. The high tech classrooms equipped with tablet computers and interactive whiteboards and the new technology center offers cutting edge tools for hands-on, interactive learning and vocational preparation.
The McKay Scholarship kindergarten class is located in the Selby Administrative & Learning Center’s freshly remodeled west wing home to Community Haven’s Selby Preschool which utilizes the Creative Curriculum and the Montessori Style of Learning. The Selby School, registered with the Florida Department of Education, specializes in offering students with disabilities in kindergarten and grades 9 – 12 a private school education with small teacher to student ratios, scheduled community outings, and hands-on learning with school -approved McKay Scholarship Matrix 251-253 tuition of $11,000 and Matrix 254-255 tuition of $15,000.
The $200K+ Selby School Building remodeling project which includes Fry Family Foundation Technology Center and the Fry Family Athletic Pavilion was funded through the combined generosity of The William G. & Marie Selby Foundation; The Roberta Leventhal Sudakoff Foundation; The Linnie E. Dalbeck Memorial Foundation and The Fry Family Foundation. The general contractor, Half Acre Construction, owned by Jack Cox, project manager Tom Rees and project lead Glen McCrain was also recognized for their nearly $20,000 in kind contribution of time and talent on the project.
