[St. Petersburg, Fla. ~ September 16, 2013] Philanthropist and realtor Helen Torres will be the star of a gala on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, honoring her 20 years of support for the annual “Pops in the Park” concert, a free event which she initiated to help save the Orchestra in a time of financial difficulty and to bring classical music to a larger public audience of all ages, especially to new generations of children.
Sponsored by The Florida Orchestra Guild of St. Petersburg, Inc., “Heart of Gold, A Tribute to Helen Torres,” will be a cocktail reception held in the ballroom of The Birchwood, 340 Beach Drive, St. Petersburg, on October 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost of individual tickets is $50. Patron tickets are $150 and include two tickets and a listing in the event program.
For information on purchasing individual or patron tickets or on sponsorship opportunities, call event chair Judy Cunniff, 727-824-8577.
RE/MAX Metro’s JJ and the Z—better known as Julie Jones and Kathryn Krayer Zimring—have signed on as a Gold Sponsor of the gala. Jones said, “We are excited to be supporting The Florida Orchestra in this way.” RE/MAX Metro offices are at 201 2nd Avenue North, St. Petersburg.
Helen Torres’ passion for the arts led her in the 1990’s to support the Orchestra by subsidizing the first free concert in St. Petersburg’s North Straub Park, an idea she had taken to Orchestra management. She committed to continuing financial support for those concerts for 20 years. Now, to accommodate huge crowds, the concerts are held in St. Petersburg on the downtown waterfront in Vinoy Park. The 2013 free concert in St. Petersburg is set for Saturday, October 19, 2013, beginning at 7 p.m. The Tampa concert in River Tower Park will take place on Sunday, October 20, also at 7 p.m.
