Event Announced as Michael Klauber Returns from Leading Wine-Buying Trips through South Africa
Michael’s On East Co-Proprietor Michael Klauber returned to his Sarasota office this week having concluded six weeks of travels through South Africa this summer. Michael, his wife Terri and Ryan Hilton of Admiral Travel International led three groups of Gulf Coast Connoisseur Club (GCCC) members through South Africa’s top wine estates and unique safari experiences on these exclusive wine and food excursions.
“We are so fortunate to have visited with many of South Africa’s top winemakers at historic wine farms and beautiful estates during our travels,” said Klauber. “I was even more thrilled when I learned one of our gracious hosts was able to travel to Sarasota this month and offer our local guests his highly-rated wine portfolio.”
Simon Barlow, proprietor of the Rustenberg Wine Estate, will host a South African Wine Dinner at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Michael’s Wine Cellar. Among eight wine pairings, featured wines will include the famous “5 Soliders” Chardonnay and “John X Merriman” Meritage as well as the lauded “Peter Barlow” Cabernet Sauvignon named after Simon’s father. A specially-designed South African five-course menu is currently being developed to pair with the hand-picked wines.
Barlow and his wife were surprise guests who joined the GCCC group on safari for a unique wine dinner held in the bush at Londolozi Game Reserve under the stars last month.
“Considered South African ‘wine royalty,’ it was a special treat meeting and truly getting to know the Barlows,” remarked Klauber. “They so enjoyed our group, they even invited us to their private home during our travels through the Cape winelands. Simon’s good-natured, generous hospitality will be evident as we present this special wine dinner together.”
The Sept. 24 Rustenberg Wine Dinner is open to the public for $95 per person plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and space is limited. Please call 941-366-0007, ext. 224, for more information and reservations.
About Rustenberg Wine Estate
Founded in 1682 and nestled in the valley of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, Rustenberg’s rich heritage has been informed by many centuries of human influence striving to understand and work with nature to produce wines of distinct character true to their terrior, variety and informed style.
Rustenberg has a wine-growing history dating back to 1682, when Roelof Pasman from Meurs, near the Rhine, recognized its wine-growing potential. By 1781, some 3000 cases of wine were produced on the farm. Production doubled by the end of the century and a new cellar was built. Wine has been bottled at this cellar for an unbroken period since 1892.
In the early 1800s, Rustenberg was divided by owner Jacob Eksteen and a section was given to his son-in-law, who named it Schoongezicht and sold it soon after. Rustenberg and Schoongezicht were at their peak around 1812, with beautiful homesteads and flourishing vineyards. But by mid-century, recession coupled with disease in the vines and brought bankruptcy and dispossession. Schoongezicht was rescued in 1892 by John X Merriman (who was to become Prime Minister of the Cape), and Rustenberg by his brother-in-law Sir Jacob Barry. Together they revitalized the farms.
In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, later acquiring Schoongezicht and reuniting the properties. Their son Simon took over the running of the farm in 1987. The Barlows have been involved with Rustenberg for over 60 years: the longest period any one family has owned the farm. Learn more about Rustenberg Wines at www.rustenberg.co.za.
