|SARASOTA, FLA, – September 3, 2013 –All Faiths Food Bank operates several programs in Sarasota and DeSoto County schools to provide food and nutritional education to students. Residents are invited to join our skilled staff as often as once a week to just a few hours a month to help with preparation, distribution and community outreach programs. We encourage people who especially enjoy working with kids to volunteer, though packing help at various locations is also needed.
“These kids need our help,” said All Faiths Nutrition Education Director Jill Collins. “We provide food for them as well as teach them to prepare nutritious meals and make healthy decisions. We couldn’t do this without our dedicated volunteers.”
With school starting, volunteers are critical as many of the programs operate to full capacity and opportunities to expand are ongoing. There are many ways to help:
GROWING HEALTHY KIDS: assisting the Food Bank staff as they teach preschool-age children the value of good nutrition through stories, fun food activities, and puppet shows. A volunteer training class and luncheon is scheduled on Thursday, September 12 at noon. Additional training will be held as needed. Contact Jill at email@example.com or call 941-379-6333.
COOKING MATTERS: assisting the Food Bank staff with fun, hands-on cooking classes as they teach families how to prepare nutritious meals with limited resources, learn how to make healthy food choices, and provide them with grocery shopping budgeting tips. A volunteer training class will be held on Monday, September 16, at 2 pm. Contact Nancy at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 941-379-6333.
BACKPACK KIDS: assist in providing back packs full of food to students on Fridays so they can eat during weekends and holidays. Packing help is needed on Wednesdays at All Faiths Food Bank, and distribution and delivery help is need for several schools every other Wednesday or Thursday. Packing starts September 11, 2013, and will continue weekly throughout the school year. Contact Jen at email@example.com or call 941-379-6333.
