Girls will learn how to protect against cyber dangers on Oct. 5 at Oldsmar Public Library
TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 3, 2013) — U.S. teens between the ages of 12 and 17, 95 percent are online and 80 percent of them use social media sites. And 88 percent of social media-using teens have witnessed other people be mean or cruel on social network sites, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
Cyber-bullying is just one of the topics that will be covered at “Dangers of a Digital You” on Oct. 5 from 12-1:30 p.m. at the Oldsmar Public Library. This educational program will cover the dangers of cyber-bullying, predatory risk and sharing inappropriate content on social media platforms and other electronic devices.
“Dangers of a Digital You” will use role-playing exercises to simulate real-life situations, teaching girls to make smarter decisions to minimize their risk of encountering digital dangers.
The Mini-Fems Committee of Femfessionals Tampa Bay – an organization for positive, driven female professionals – is hosting the event. Dawn Willey, a licensed clinical social worker and owner of Carpe Diem Counseling in Tampa, will lead the program.
“Our goal is to help girls recognize the difference between healthy communication and activities that are potentially dangerous for them or someone else,” said Noelle Anderson, President of Femfessionals Tampa Bay, and owner of the PR and marketing firm True Blue Communications. “In a world that’s becoming increasingly connected and transparent thanks to digital technology, it is so important to teach this generation of girls how to protect themselves.”
“Dangers of a Digital You” is the first event planned by Femfessionals Tampa Bay’s Mini-Fems Committee. Mini-Fems Tampa Bay will bring enriching experiences and positive messages to girls ages 12-17 through events like “Dangers of a Digital You.”
Sponsors for “Dangers of a Digital You” include Tutor Doctor and MOMO Digital Design. Attendees will be given goodies and have a chance to win prizes donated by Busch Gardens, Countryside Congo River Golf and Countryside Lanes.
Event registration, which includes lunch, is $15 per person and space is limited. Girls 12-17 and their adult female companions are invited to register at www.Femfessionals.com on the Tampa Bay page’s October events calendar.
