One of Tampa Bay area’s largest homes
Sterling Bay 23,000 S.F. Estate Earns Top National Award
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLA. – It features a 2,200-square-foot master bedroom, a 1,500-square-foot home theater based on the historic Tampa Theater, and a re-creation of The Oval Office. And recently, the 23,000-square-foot Mision lago estate residence built by Tampa-based Sterling Bay Homes earned top national honors during the 50th Annual Golden Nugget Awards in San Francisco.
Situated on Lake Thonotosassa in eastern Hillsborough County, this sprawling home received the Golden Nugget’s Grand Award as the nation’s Best Custom Home 12,000 Square Feet and Over.
The panel of judges noted that the home “…achieves that rare balance of both old and new in a palette that is timeless. From the entry gate to the rooms within, one is captured by the view, the attention to detail and the livable scale of the whole composition. While the house represents the owners’ desire for a Santa Barbara style, it also pays homage to Addison Mizner, one of Florida’s greatest architects from the 1920s.”
And at no point is that more evident than in the home’s theater, an homage to the beloved Tampa Theater in nearby downtown Tampa. With seating for 20 people, the replica even features the Tampa Theater’s celebrated starry-sky ceiling, as well as its stage and proscenium arch. Elsewhere in the home are:
• A 5,000-square-foot central courtyard
• A 900-square-foot sports lounge with an extensive sports-memorabilia collection, and
custom-designed carpeting that duplicates the infield at St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field.
• A rock-and-roll gallery of memorabilia, signed guitars and a star-studded Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Because of its size (the home has a 12-zone heating-and-air-conditioning system) and handcrafted details, Mision lago took three years to build.
