Here are the latest developments regarding the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists’ 2013 Griot Drum Awards:
New deadline for 2013 Griot Award entries
The deadline to submit entries to the contest is Friday, Sept. 6. Entries may be submitted online at http://tbabj.com/?page_id=838 or via U.S. mail.
Print, broadcast and online media professionals of any ethnicity can enter the contest, which honors quality coverage of people of color in the Tampa Bay area. Journalists submitting entries do not have to be a member of TBABJ, a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The entry fee is $25 for non-TBABJ members and $20 for members.
Any individual or news organization in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties can enter materials published, broadcast or presented online between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2012. There are 30 categories this year.
Award winners will be announced Oct. 12 at TBABJ’s Eighth Annual Griot Drum Awards & Scholarship Banquet, to be held inside The Nielsen Company’s sprawling complex in Oldsmar.
Tampa Bay Times funds 10 staffers’ first entries
Attention, Tampa Bay Times employees! The first 10 staffers who act get to submit one entry in any category for free, courtesy of your employer. The move is a continuing recognition by the Times of the great work the chapter has done and a gratifying example of the newspaper’s long-standing support of the chapter’s efforts.
If you are a Times staffer, please enter at least one story, photo or multimedia presentation in the contest and feel free to encourage colleagues to enter by noting wonderful work they have done. If you are not a Times staffer, please encourage your employer to follow the Times’ lead.
