The Hernando County Supervisor of Elections office is excited to offer an online voting tool for schools to utilize for running their school elections. The program called Double Click Democracy is an online voting system that provides students with the opportunity to participate in a voting experience by using a web-based voting system.
“With limited staff and resources, it is impossible for the SOE office to offer a physical presence at the schools to assist with school elections. A teacher can make the request for a school election on the website (http://www.hernandovotes.com/?id=104). This eliminates voting equipment having to be deployed for these types of events. I am pleased Superintendent Romano is on board and recognizes the value this program offers,” stated Supervisor Shirley Anderson.
In addition to the web based election program, we are also available to come into a classroom to personally speak to students about the importance of voting. These requests also need to be made online.
Dr. Romano offered the following, “Shirley Hufstedler, the first United States Secretary of Education, under President Jimmy Carter, once said, “The role of the teacher remains the highest calling of a free people. To the teacher, America entrusts her most precious resource, her children; and asks that they be prepared… to face the rigors of individual participation in a democratic society.”
The importance of the role each of us plays in a democracy and the civic duty we have to be involved in the election process are themes that Shirley Anderson, Hernando County Supervisor of Elections, brings to her office’s School Elections and Education Programs.
The use of customized ballots for school elections will realistically reflect the election process for our students and for those who are 16 years of age or older, they will be able to actually register to vote and be ready for the first election that occurs when they turn 18. Double Click Democracy allows an exciting experience that lets students check the results online.
The election process is a crucial part of any civics education and Ms. Anderson’s office is able to tailor her presentations to any grade level.
We are looking forward to partnering with the Supervisor of Elections in raising our students’ awareness about elections and the important part they play as citizens of the United States.”
The first election is already scheduled for Springstead High School. Please visit the SOE website for complete information on all programs: www.hernandovotes.com
