SARASOTA, FL – Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, Inc. will be celebrating a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, September 16th 2013 at 10 AM – 11:30 AM. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be performed by the Manatee Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the grand opening of the newly remodeled Selby School Building and the opening of The Selby School – a private McKay Scholarship school for eligible students in kindergarten and grades 9 – 12 on their serene, 32-acre campus located at 4405 DeSoto Road off University Parkway. Senator John M. McKay, Florida Senate President in 2000-2002 and visionary behind the McKay Scholarship Program for students with disabilities; Dr. Sarah H. Pappas, President of the William G. & Marie Selby Foundation and Carolyn J. Mason, Chair of the Sarasota County Commissioners will be special guest speakers.
The former Selby Day School Building circa 1968–a 4,000 square foot re-purposed building remodeled by HalfAcre Construction–is now home to state-of-the-art classrooms and computer labs, staff offices, an upscale re-sale store and a covered athletic court for basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard, and other recreational activities. The high tech classrooms equipped with tablet computers and interactive whiteboard technology serve the McKay Scholarship students in grades 9-12. Adult clients enrolled in our Haven Industries Program also utilize the new computer lab and extra classroom space for educational and vocational training.
The McKay Scholarship kindergarten class is located in the Selby Administrative & Learning Center’s freshly remodeled west wing home to Community Haven’s Selby Preschool which utilizes the Creative Curriculum and the Montessori Style of Learning.
The Selby School, registered with the Florida Department of Education, specializes in offering students with disabilities in kindergarten and grades 9 – 12 a private school education with small teacher to student ratios, scheduled community outings, and hands-on learning with school-approved McKay Scholarship Matrix 251-253 tuition of $11,000 and Matrix 254-255 tuition of $15,000.
