St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) officials were honored to be awarded the “Airport Safety Mark of Distinction Award” by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Southern Region. Nomination for this distinction was made by the airport’s assigned FAA Southern Region Airport Certification Inspector who recently completed our annual inspection.
The FAA developed this award to promote safety among the Southern Region certificated airports and to recognize any action, effort, or event involving an airport that deserves praise for its intended or demonstrated effect on the advancement of safety. PIE was noted for its ”safe and successful oversight of the rehabilitation of Runway 4/22 which took place October 2011-August 2012, the drainage improvements with Pinellas County, and 35,000 linear feet of crack sealing on Runway 18/36”. FAA Airports Division Manager Winsome Lenfert states in the award certificate, “Through professional action and fervent effort the staff and management of the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport have improved safety for the traveling public. Their dedicated efforts are deserving of praise and are indicative of their professionalism and commitment to safety.”
Airport Director Noah Lagos accepted the award in a presentation from Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) Chairman Ken Welch at the August 20th BCC Meeting. Chairman Welch stated, “Congratulations to the airport team for their hard work and dedication.” Lagos added, “The airport team is above all committed to safety and we are proud of this achievement and thank FAA for this recognition.”
