(St. Petersburg, FL., August 21, 2013) Join Wawa in saving lives in our community this fall during a special event to help boost the blood supply. Several Florida Wawa stores will host blood drives from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, September 2, 3 and 4. Blood transfusions are crucial in helping save the lives of cancer patients, premature infants, trauma patients and those needing routine surgery. Click HERE to view the participating Wawa blood drive location schedule.
Each lifesaving donor will receive a coupon for a FREE Wawa Hoagie and Free Wawa iced tea (any variety), two Fandango vouchers for a FREE movie ticket, plus entry at each location to win a Wawa Summer Gift Basket! Donors also enjoy a wellness check-up of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, including a cholesterol screening.
Wawa Associates are committed to supporting blood drives and saving lives. During the past year, more than 1,150 pints of blood have been donated at Wawa’s Florida blood drives. Wawa’s blood drives are open to the public. They are supported by Wawa volunteers, who give of their time, and they donate their blood for this important, life-saving effort; a single blood donation can help as many as three people.
Generally, healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Blood donations profoundly affect the lives of patients in our community and in many cases, one donation can save up to three patients. If you are not eligible to donate, please recruit a friend, family member, relative or customer.
On January 27, 2012 three of Florida’s independent, not-for-profit blood centers, Community Blood Centers of Florida, Inc. (CBCF), Florida’s Blood Centers, Inc. (FBC) and Florida Blood Services, Inc. (FBS) came together in a merger of equals and OneBlood, Inc. was established. OneBlood is an innovative, forward-thinking blood center that provides safe, available and affordable blood to more than 200 hospital partners and their patients in 72 counties throughout Florida and southern Georgia and Alabama. OneBlood has major hubs in Central Florida, South Florida, Tampa Bay and the Florida Panhandle.
Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960’s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa is your all day, everyday stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, and surcharge-free ATM’s. A chain of more than 625 convenience retail stores (over 300 offering gasoline), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia and Central Florida. The stores offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies, freshly-brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, built-to-order Specialty Beverages, and an assortment of soups, sides and snacks.
