|Keni Thomas, recipient of theAmerican Patriot Award, will be the keynote speaker
SARASOTA, Fla. August 20, 2013 – The Junior Leagues ofSarasota and Manatee counties are hosting The Legacy of Valor Celebration Luncheonon Thursday, November 7, 2013, as part of the Legacy of Valor Campaign, whichhonors the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families. The keynotespeaker at the event will be Keni Thomas, a decorated combat veteran of theelite 75th U.S. Army Ranger Rgt special operations unit. Thomas hasworked as a military analyst and author and now spends his time as a singer,songwriter and performer.
Thomas will recount his personal experiences in the chaotic 1993Battle of Mogadishu and will share a unique set of leadership lessons and aninspired view of our greater purpose. His book, “Get It On!” reminds readers “that we, as individuals, do indeedmatter, that we are anything but ordinary, fully capable of carrying outlife-changing assignments at any level and in any situation. We can make adifference in this world.”
His message at The Legacy of Valor Celebration Luncheonwill help celebrate and honor area veterans for their military service. The luncheonwill raise awareness of the yearlong Legacy of Valor campaign and be anopportunity to share current information about programs specifically designedto help veterans in the Southwest Florida region.
“We look forward to honoring our veterans at this very special luncheon andacting as a conduit for information pertaining to veterans,” said CherylBurstein, Chair of the Luncheon and past president of The Junior League ofSarasota. “By creating an atmosphere in red, white & blue décor, variouscolor guards, bands, etc. it will create a patriotic tone and make the veteransand guests feel proud about supporting the country, the veterans and activeduty military.”
The Legacy of Valor campaign, which was createdby The Patterson Foundation, consists of a mosaic of community-drivenpartnerships that will educate, build enthusiasm and focus the community torecognize the service and sacrifice of all veterans and their families. ThePatterson Foundation hopes every person in the community will take part in theLegacy of Valor campaign through his or her time, talent or treasure. “We are very excited to be collaborating withthe Junior League of Sarasota on this luncheon,” said Lisa Sampson, event volunteerand past president of the Junior League of Manatee County. “This event represents the first partnership forour two leagues and we look forward to building relationships that will echointo the future.”
