ST PETERSBURG, Fla. – In honor of National Cupcake Day (August 18), The 3rd Annual Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest, with 58 entries from all over the Tampa Bay area, was held at the Morean Arts Center on Central Avenue this weekend with 8 judges being employed to determine the best overall cupcakes in St. Petersburg.
After an overwhelmingly large response in 2011 and continuing through the 2nd Annual contest in 2012, the turnout in downtown St. Petersburg did not dissapoint today.
The best cupcake in St. Petersburg by a novice baker was determined by a panel of four judges that included: Dexter Fabian and Chris from iLovetheBurg.com, Daniel Delgado from Sweet! and Erica Hudgens from Datz Dough. The winning cupcake was a Strawberry Chocolate Fudge by Lindsay Ingram, the second place winner was Greta Hunziker with her spicy Maeza Magdalena (sweet cornbread with jalapenos and siracha).
The professional category was judged by Arielle Stevenson from Creative Loading, Tami Simms from the Downtown Business Association (and local foodie), Executive Chef from the St. Pete Yacht Club Justin Keegan and Valerie Knight (runner up in 2012). The winning cupcake was Better than Sex made by Kristina Small and the second place winner was Melanie Dean with her Persian Lemon Pomegranate.
Wayne Atherholt, executive director of the Morean Arts Center was “amazed by the turnout this year and to see so many returning contestants, there are some very talented bakers in the Bay Area”. “This event has been a great way of introducing people to the Morean Arts Center who may not have otherwise known about us. We will continue to educate the local community about the Morean, and hope that this event showcases our fun-loving and creative spirit” stated Atherholt.
There was a People’s Choice component of the event and during the three hour time period the public were invited to cast their vote for the best cupcake with tickets sold for one dollar a piece, all proceeds benefitting the Morean’s educational programs and scholarships. The winner of the People’s Choice award for best cupcake was Erin Moyse with her American Cupcake in Paris and second place was Karen Chikodroff with her Summer Garden Party – soon to be located at Chikcakes.
The Morean has four facilities in St. Petersburg: the Chihuly Collection, Glass Studio & Hot Shop, the Morean Arts Center galleries, including the Bank of America Children’s Learning Center plus the Morean Center for Clay at the historic train station.
