|Palmetto resident Cassie Robinson is surrounded by employees of Pierce Manufacturing during a recent Manatee Habitat work day. Pierce volunteers provided a fresh coat of paint on the Robinson home following the completion of a major rehab funded through the Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency. This is the third joint rehab project between Manatee Habitat and Palmetto CRA and additional projects are planned for the coming year. We are grateful for all the work and help these groups have provided.
Cassie Robinson is an 84 year old widow, mother, grandmother, foster mother and friend to many. Cassie moved to Manatee County when she was 16 years old. She grew up “working the farm” and, as a child, earned money by pulling moss that was bundled and sold for chair stuffing. In later years, Cassie was employed by Manatee Junior College (now State College of Florida) as a custodian, where she remained for twenty years.
Cassie was married to her husband for 53 years before he passed away in 2007. She and her husband raised 6 children of their own and 4 foster children. Her children were all raised in the house that she still calls “home”.
Cassie affectionately remembers sitting in the car with her husband, late at night, watching the “home of their dreams” being built. She remembers hoping, along with her husband, that this particular house would be theirs one day. It eventually came to pass! This “home” is full of memories, and now, through a partnership with Palmetto CRA, it can be part of the legacy that Cassie passes on to her children and grandchildren.
