Lakewood Ranch, FL, July 30, 2013 – The American Diabetes Association is challenging riders to be part of the Stop Diabetes® movement by taking part in the annual Tour de Cure®, a cycling event happening on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Main Street, Lakewood Ranch. This event brings individuals from Tampa to Naples together to help raise funds in order to change the future of diabetes and help stop this devastating disease.
This will be the fourth year that the Tour de Cure is held in Lakewood Ranch. Goals for this year is to continue to the trend of increasing riders, teams, champions, corporate sponsorships and overall funding. Total fundraising goal this year is $350,000, up from $256,000 from the 2013 ride, and $86,540 for the 2011 ride.
To achieve these goals we need the communities to join in the ride on March 30, 2014.
The Tour de Cure is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether you ride 10 miles or 100 miles, you will travel a route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel the journey, and fans to cheer you on.
Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes, including one quarter of a million in the Tampa bay area. An additional 79 million Americans are at high risk for type 2 diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.7 million people are unaware that they have the disease. Every dollar raised through Tour de Cure plays an important role in stopping diabetes for good and more than 75 cents of every dollar raised supports the mission.
“An impressive 73% of every dollar spent supports research, advocacy, and services for people affected by diabetes,” said Melissa Parsons, American Diabetes Association serving Southwest Florida. “The Tour de Cure raises funds through registration fees and pledges collected by the cyclists.” she added.
Please visit us online at http://diabetes.org/swfloridatour or call Melissa Parsons at 813-885-5007 for volunteer or to register to ride. The SW Florida ADA team needs riders as well as volunteers to help with the ride on March 30th. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available. Please visit our website (above) and register to join in the 2014 ride toward a cure for diabetes and we want you to join us!
