SARASOTA, Fla – (8/1/2013) Senior Friendship Centers in partnership with Sarasota County Schools and Libraries, Sarasota Military Academy, Hawks Flight Farm Sarasota RC Squadron, Robert L. Taylor Community Complex and the Association for the Study of African American Life & History (ASALH) are hosting a week long action-packed tribute to veterans and their families Nov 11 -16, 2013 in Sarasota and Venice as part of the Legacy of Valor Campaign honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans and their families.
Created by The Patterson Foundation, the Legacy of Valor campaign highlights a series of community-driven partnerships to create a tapestry of events that educate, build enthusiasm and focus the community toward honoring veterans and their families, inspiring patriotism and embracing freedom. Traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial Exhibit “Bringing Home the Wall,” a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. SFC Sarasota, 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily.
1940s WWII Encampment the 1st Infantry Divisions Historical 1940’s WWII encampment, complete with period uniforms, rents, equipment, and art featuring WWII era re-enactors. SFC Sarasota. 8 – 4:30 p.m.
Red Tail Squadron Traveling Exhibit – Highlighting the Tuskegee Airmen, how 10,000+ black men and women overcame obstacles to train and fight as US Army Air Corps pilots. Housed in a 53’ semi-rig, this exhibit includes a 30 seat temperature controlled movie theatre with 160-degree panoramic screen. Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. 8:30 – 4:30 p.m. daily.
Take Our Stand Travelling Exhibit: The African American Military Experience in the Age of Jim Crow, on loan from the American civil War Center, depicting the Black military experience from the Spanish-American War to the desegregation of the US Military in 1948. Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. 8:30 – 5 p.m. daily.
Veterans of Color – Veterans of Color, a documentary focusing on black veterans from the Vietnam and Korean Wars and WWII produced by ASAHL, will run in a continuous loop. Robert L. Taylor Community Complex. 8:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Historical Aviation Society Exhibit Sarasota’s Historical Aviation Society’s Exhibit, showcasing aviation artifacts. SFC Sarasota.

WWII American Heroes – Exhibit of military uniforms, and memorabilia. SFC Sarasota, 8:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m.
Fly Girls Traveling Exhibit – Showcases the story of the WWII WASP program on loan from Texas Women’s University. These were the first women in history to fly American military aircraft. SFC Sarasota and Venice,

WWII RC War Birds Exhibit, Sarasota’s & Venice’s RC Squadron’s exhibit of scaled War Birds. SFC Sarasota & SFC Venice. TBA
The Portrait Project, an exhibit of portraits of local combat veterans by artist Malendra Trick. The exhibit will be on display at SFC Sarasota Nov. 11 – 16, and then travel to various community locations. 8:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Thankasoldier Walls of Gratitude will be available as interactive public art pieces saluting our hometown heroes. Visit these free standing chalkboard walls through Sarasota and post a sentiment or message of support. Locations to be announced.
Through the Eyes of a Soldier Exhibit featuring photos by USMC Combat Photographer Sgt. Matthew Troyer. SFC Sarasota, SFC Venice, and Sarasota Libraries. 8:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Swing Canteen Legends of the USO performance and dance. SFC Sarasota 7 – 11 p.m. Join Judy Garand, Marlene Dietrich, the Andrews Sisters, Frances Langord and the Rockettes by Bonny Gay Productions.
