In 1988, the blues-rock quartet was formed by singer/harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, bassist Bobby Sheehan and drummer Brendan Hill. Blues Traveler moved from the suburbs of New Jersey to New York City in the late ‘80s, where they became part of a jam-band scene and shared bills with groups like Spin Doctors and Phish. Signed to A&M, they released their self-titled debut album in 1990 and followed it with Travelers & Thieves in 1991.
In 1993, they released their third album, Save His Soul, which became the band’s first to make the Top 100. Their fourth album, 1994’s Four, went platinum. The album’s “Run-Around” became one of the biggest singles of 1995, spending nearly a full year on the charts, and earned the band a Grammy. They released the double-live album, Live from the Fall, in 1996, and their fifth studio album, Straight on Till Morning, followed in 1997.
While putting out a string of popular albums in the ‘90s, the band endured its share of adversity, from Popper’s near fatal motorcycle accident (he recorded and toured while in a wheelchair for two years) and the tragic loss in 1999 of founding bassist Bobby Sheehan at the age of 31. True to its name, the band traveled on, with the addition of Tad Kinchla, Chad’s brother, on bass and Ben Wilson on keyboards.
The new millennium saw a newly charged Blues Traveler, and their sixth record, Bridge, was released in 2001. The same year, the group released the live What You and I Have Been Through. The studio record Truth Be Told followed in 2003, and another concert album, Live on The Rocks, appeared in 2004. The group returned to the studio in 2004, releasing Bastardos! In 2007, Blues Traveler released Cover Yourself, a collection of previous hits reworked with acoustic arrangements.
In 2012, the band released 25, a two-disc set celebrating the group’s 25th anniversary. One disc features greatest hits like “Run-Around,” “Hook,” “But Anyway,” and “Carolina Blues” and a brand-new cover of Sublime’s “What I Got.” The second disc includes unreleased demos. It was followed by Suzie Cracks the Whip, the group’s 11th studio album. They worked with the powerhouse production team of Sam Hollander and Dave “Sluggo” Katz who have worked with the likes of Gym Class Heroes and Katy Perry.
Their movie credits include Blues Brothers 2000, Kingpin, Wildflowers and others. They have been featured on Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits and VH1’s Behind the Music. Blues Traveler holds the record for the most appearances of any artist on The Late Show with David Letterman.
The quintet continues electrifying fans around the world. They have sold more than 13 million combined units worldwide and have played over 6,000 live shows in front of more than 30 million people.
