Family owned, certified Women Business Enterprise (WBE) with nearly 30 years of service in Florida will compete for top honors in the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Awards program
Tampa, Fla. – (July 23, 2013) – Cox Fire Protection, Inc., a leading provider of a full range of fire protection services to customers in the Southeast, has been chosen as one of five finalists for the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year Awards in the 51-250 Employees category. The Awards highlight the impact of businesses with 250 employees or less on the community and celebrate the achievements of companies that demonstrate leadership and excellence in operational management, community involvement and ethical business practices. The winners will be announced at a banquet taking place on Friday, September 20 at the Tampa Convention Center.
“We’re humbled to be recognized among such extraordinary companies in Tampa Bay as a finalist for the Small Business of the Year Awards,” said Linda Cox, CEO of Cox Fire Protection. “This program is the ultimate recognition for business in the region. The review process was both rigorous and fun, and helped our team improve across the board as we prepared for each visit and interview. We are deeply grateful to the Tampa Chamber and leaders like Jamie Harden who offered us invaluable guidance and encouragement. But we’re most grateful to our customers, who inspire us to continually seek ways to exceed their expectations every day, and our employees, whose quality work and dedication are the foundation of our success.”
Several employees, such as Richard Holloway, Cox Fire Protection’s superintendent, have been with the company over 20 years.
The Small Business of the Year Awards will be presented in three categories based on the number of employees, with a fourth category created specifically for startup companies. An award will also be presented to the Outstanding Small Business Leader of the Year.
Cox Fire Protection is a family owned business founded in Tampa in 1984. The company has enjoyed steady growth since its inception. Founders Ron and Linda Cox credit the success of their business to the adherence of management goals built upon four pillars: quality, effective project management, competitive pricing, and on-time delivery and completion. Cox Fire Protection’s dedication to its core value of always “doing the right thing” for its customers has propelled its growth over the years and helped the company navigate good times as well as bad. Despite the recent recession and extreme volatility of the construction market in the past few years, Cox Fire Protection was able to identify new niches and maximize opportunities within them by opening offices in Ocala and Jacksonville. By realistically evaluating the current state of their core business and pivoting to take advantage of market conditions, the company was able to strengthen its competitiveness during the downturn and regain profitability – without eliminating jobs.
The Coxes are ensuring that the successful business they’ve built continues to thrive with the next generation. Son Scott Cox has become increasingly involved in executive leadership roles with the company. He is now Vice President and Director of Preconstruction Services and also serves on Cox Fire Protection’s board of directors.
“Cox Fire Protection has an exceptional management team and operates with excellence,” said Mark House, managing director for the Florida Division of the Beck Group. “Their early adoption of Building Information Management (BIM) and commitment to technology has set them apart from all of their competition. They are nimble enough to thrive in good times and successfully navigate the bad ones. They make community service a priority for everyone in their organization. We congratulate Linda, Ron, and their talented team on a job well done, and wish them continued success.”
