WHAT: Equality Day Tea hosted by Business and Professional Women St. Pete/Pinellas
WHY: To celebrate the passing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, August 26, 1920, the Women’s Suffrage Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Also, “Women’s Equality Day gives BPW an opportunity to honor the legacy of women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul.” , said BPW St. PetePinellas president Gretta Paige Bellas.
Note:The Equal Right Amendment (ERA) authored by Alice Paul and passed by the U.S. Congress in 1972 has yet to be ratified as a Constitutional amendment by the Florida legislature.

WHY A TEA? Tea houses and teas were used as gathering places for meetings and fund raising during the suffrage movement.
ABOUT BPW: The local organization, BPW ST. Pete Pinellas, is affiliated with the national BPW Foundation. It was recently recognized as the outstanding BPW organization in the State of Florida and recognized by the St. Petersburg City Council.
