(Sarasota, FL) The Sarasota County Commission recently awarded Art Center Sarasota a $36,773 Tourist Development Cultural/Arts grant to help fund its 2013/2014 exhibition season entitled “Incredible Journey.” The exhibition season runs November 7, 2013, through October 3, 2014, and is comprised of six cycles, each encompassing up to four exhibits.
“The TDC grant Art Center Sarasota receives each year helps us raise the bar by producing more high-quality, curated exhibits that draw substantial audiences from our region and beyond,” says Lisa Berger, the center’s director.
She anticipates that the exhibitions will draw more than 25,000 visitors to the center throughout the season. According to Berger, a significant percentage of those visitors will be cultural tourists from outside Sarasota County.
“The TDC grant empowers us to reach out to areas far beyond Sarasota County and create a strong regional presence. We will continue to establish both our organization and our area as a top arts destination.”
Art Center Sarasota launches its season on November 7, 2013, with “CUBEMUSIC,” a site-specific installation created by the renowned artist, Craig Colorusso, who explores the intersection of sound, light, and space in his sculpture. The work is comprised of six, four-foot metal cubes that emanate light and music. This exhibition will be accompanied by “Sun Boxes,” a solar-powered sound installation, also created by Colorusso. Twenty speaker boxes will be placed around Sarasota County, inviting viewers to experience an ever-changing environment of space, sound and light.
The season opener also includes “Pulp Culture,” a group exhibition showcasing the many ways paper can be used to create art. A juried exhibition, entitled “miniatures,” will showcase works smaller than 12″ x 12″. Art Center Sarasota’s “Instructor’s Exhibit,” featuring work by ACS class and workshop instructors, will also be exhibited during this cycle, which runs through January 3, 2014.

About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.
