Scanning the roster of sprinters who will compete at the National Senior Games in Cleveland July 27th, no one else is local. Of the 500 Floridians competing in everything from pickle-ball to ping-pong, I’m one of 6 Floridian sprinters going to Nationals.
To have qualified to go, I’m currently 3rd in State in the 200, 400 & 1500 Meters, 4th in the 100 Meters. I’m competing in all 4 events for a week! Rare.
My 100 meters time is is :06 slower than NCAA college girls personal records listed in the USC ’12 Track & Field Media Guide. I just placed in my 54th 5K race or longer for my age group since 2006 in the Tampa/Sarasota/Bradenton area.
At 60, many say I look 20 years younger than I am. I run faster/longer than most high school kids.
The publisher of “The Running Journal,” for which I write a monthly column, says it is very unusual for anyone with my sprint times to have ever finished a marathon, vegan or not. I did my first marathon in 2010 and was the 5th oldest female to finish the Palm Beaches Marathon.
My mom, aunt and both sisters had breast cancer. I’m the only adult female without.
I am a certified personal trainer and running coach. I’ll be training with my coach (the Manatee High Girls Track/Cross Country Coach) at the Manatee High School Track from 5:45-7:30 pm this Weds…next Tuesday 7/23, at the track from 6:45-8:15 am, and Thursday 7/25, 5:45-7:30 pm.
Track address: 1160 32nd Street West, Bradenton, 34205
If you need to arrange alternate time, I run on Manatee Beach, Robinson Preserve or at GT Bray in Bradenton at many other times.
