ST PETERSBURG (July 10, 2013) — A new Political Action Committee (PAC), Citizens for the St Pete Pier, has come together to advocate for building the new St Pete Pier (also known as “The Lens”). As one indication of support, the PAC has garnered 700+ Likes on Facebook in just a few days.
Under the tagline, “BuildThePier,” the PAC is calling on residents to vote NO on cancelling a contract to construct the new St Pete Pier. The PAC’s primary purpose of existence is to share accurate information and clarify misperceptions about the new St Pete Pier. To start, there are responses to a few key misperceptions at BuildThePier.com.
The PAC is co-chaired and driven by a diverse group of 15 young professionals from areas of law, finance, marketing, construction, architecture, hospitality, and more, including several business owners. These co-chairs, along with several other key supporters, are all providing services pro bono. Funds raised are being spent on informational materials, mail, and get-out-the-vote efforts, all aimed at helping ensure voters have accurate information about the Pier.
Co-chairs and supporters are working on this effort for a variety of reasons. Examples relate to economic impact and the prominence of St Pete, the multitude of amenities, and fostering our progression as a burgeoning creative-class city. Some are enthusiastic about having such an artistic and iconic landmark, some look forward to the many fitness-related possibilities, and some talk of such opportunities as weddings, entertainment, and community gatherings.
