Pasco County, Florida — Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. has been awarded a 2013 Marketing Award for Interactive E-media by the Florida Economic Development Council (FEDC).
Recognizing that internet and broadcast TV are converging, Pasco EDC started experimenting a year ago with web video for economic development. Using inexpensive video to create a “web-based TV channel,” Pasco EDC created a prototype for the website of the future and a new way to convey its economic development message. This is the third State award recognizing Pasco EDC’s marketing program in the past 18 months and its fifth state or national recognition in the past three years.
“We wanted to tell Pasco County’s story in a low-cost, but innovative way that involved our community,” said John Hagen, President and CEO. “Video is seldom used in economic development effectively and mostly takes the form of either tourism stock footage or public affairs programming. We wanted to try something new that would change that.”
Pasco EDC Marketing Coordinator Summer Martin and her co-host Krista Hakes, Pasco EDC Economic Development Manager, worked with Robert Singerman of Turbo Communications to launch PascoCounty.tv during the Republican National Convention (RNC). The “webTV crew” recruited people from around Pasco County and the region to be “on-the-street” reporters to tell positive stories of Pasco County and Tampa Bay related to economic development.
“Being a part of the launch of PascoCounty.tv was epic,” said Robert Singerman, Turbo Communications President. “Bringing stories to life through video has never been easier. It would be awesome to see other Florida organizations telling their stories as well.”
Since the initial launch during the RNC, Pasco EDC staffers have brought their camera equipment and microphones to multiple economic development and community events to showcase the stories of Pasco County and Tampa Bay and to interview key area business leaders. Video production can be very time consuming, so Pasco EDC works with community partners who are already producing videos about positive elements of the community. Pasco EDC aggregates this content on it PascoCounty.tv website, then promotes it through social media, publicity, and more traditional marketing.
PascoCounty.TV videos have been viewed 4,421 times to date with an estimated total of 6,477 minutes watched. People are watching the videos for an average of 1 minute and 36 seconds, which is much longer than Pasco EDC staff anticipated, based on other web viewing trends.
Pasco EDC is quickly emerging as a leader for social media in the economic development world. Since 2012 the organization has won several marketing awards including awards for Best Use of Social Media from Business Facilities Magazine and a 2012 FEDC award for Social Media. Pasco EDC was also recognized in a national webinar on best practices for using Social Media in Economic Development.
