Southwest FL – Congratulations to the Military Officers Association of Sarasota for hosting the 2013 Florida Council of Chapters (FCOC) Convention! What a phenomenal job by our chapter. Thank you to all of you that volunteered your time, talent and treasure to make FCOC Convention a roaring success.
The registration was flawless and the Hospitality Room always full of people talking, relaxing, and checking out the great raffle prizes. All of the business meetings were conducted, and a good time was had by all! Even the small glitches turned into successes! The fire alarm that delayed our entering the Boatyard Room for the President’s Reception actually allowed people to stop and admire the different young stars of the Sailor Circus who were performing for us, and the hotel provided free drinks for a half hour because of the inconvenience.
The Venice Area Chapter did a stellar job of hosting Saturday morning’s breakfast! Captain Bob Silah, USN (Ret), MOAA Director and founder of the Tampa Chapter’s Operation Helping Hand was our Breakfast speaker, and he provided the attendees with an in-depth understanding of this vital program. We set a precedent of partnering with another MOA chapter in hosting the annual convention. Continuing to break new ground, our chapter opted for organizing a panel entitled Serving Those Who Served Our Nation to address the issues related to veterans’ issues. The panel of subject matter experts from across Florida provided their insights, and the best available
information on veteran support programs. The veterans transitioning back into our state and our community need our help in so many ways. MOAS will continue to keep our members informed and offer opportunities for each one of us to help in some way.
Thank you to so many of our MOAS members that attended the luncheon! We know it took some extra effort to change the routine and come down to the Hyatt for our June luncheon as part of the convention, but we hope you thought it was worth it. Debra
Jacobs, CEO and President of The Patterson Foundation, our luncheon speaker, provided wonderful information on origins of The Patterson Foundation, the Patriot Plaza enhancement being built at Sarasota National Cemetery and the Legacy of Valor Campaign. We hope you will all continue to follow the Legacy of Valor events and participate in as many of them as possible. Additional information is available at Our tours on the Le Barge Sarasota Bay cruise and the visit to Ringling Museum went well; even with some minor transportation hiccups and we appreciate everyone’s patience. At the evening’s Military Gala, we were honored to have General Tilelli, the Chairman of
the Board of MOAA as our speaker. Great food, good company and lots of dancing rounded out the night.
We culminated 2013 Convention with a very moving Memorial Service conducted by our Chaplain, Col. Charles Caudill; a fitting tribute to those we lost over the past year.
The flags were passed, literally, to the St. Petersburg Chapter who will host next year’s convention, 6-8 June 2014. Mark your calendars!
Once again thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors that enabled us to put on a super convention. Congratulations to all the MOAS members for continuing to showcase our wonderful organization!
