Computer Mentors Group (CMG) recently received a $7,500grant from Wells Fargo to support its STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Corps High School Program. The program helps high school aged youth earn a Microsoft certification and then employs them as resources for the community by completing technology projects for other non-profit agencies. The youth are mentored by both paid and volunteer technology mentors who introduce them to the “tools of the trade”. Examples of technology projects include company websites, video production, e-marketing campaign setups, including a recent website produced by one of the youth for Green Artery (www.greenartery.org).
The grant will allow CMG to continue the program which runs in East Tampa on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The program has been in existence since 1997 and is the flagship program of the organization. The program serves up to 40 youth simultaneously and attempts to provide skills that the youth can use to start Information Technology careers.
“Wells Fargo is committed to supporting educational programs that help make a difference in our communities,” said Machelle Maner, Community Development Officer for Wells Fargo. So we are proud to support the STEM Corps High School Program.
“We are very happy to be receiving these funds to continue to support our youth” said Ralph Smith. The funds will be used to support both the regular evening program and a special summer computer camp where 15 youth from East Tampa will engage in 15 simultaneous technology projects. The organization will use paid mentors to help guide the youth through their projects this summer, to include the hiring of a part-time Mentor/Program Coordinator who will be responsible for interviewing and selecting the youth for the program as well as soliciting projects for the youth to work on.
