LAKELAND, FL (May 6, 2013) – As part of a collaborative venture between the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) and the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency (LCRA), a new technical assistance program aimed at Downtown property and business owners is being launched this month.
The Downtown Design Assistance Program, funded by the LDDA and administered by LCRA staff, was developed out of a desire to see vacant or under-utilized second and third floor spaces in Lakeland’s historic downtown brought back into use. As Lakeland has modernized, so have property and life safety requirements which have sometimes made the redevelopment of these older structures quite complicated. A particular emphasis of this program is to promote the conversion of upper floors for residential uses. Other qualified projects will include those that convert ground floor spaces to retail or service uses.
Similar to the very successful Design Assistance Program offered in Lakeland’s Dixieland commercial area, this program will provide qualified selected applicants with free technical assistance from local architects. Unlike the program in Dixieland, services rendered are specific to site development and building and fire code compliance, rather than exterior architectural changes.
Downtown Design Assistance will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible applicants. More information about the program and program guidelines can be located online at www.lakelandcra.net or by contacting the City of Lakeland’s LCRA staff at 863-834-6011
