(Sarasota, Florida) The Jazz Club of Sarasota concludes its 2013 “Jazz at Two” concert series with pianist Tony Castellano, Jr. (April 5, 2013), vocalist June Garber (April 12, 2013), the Jerry Eckert Trio (April 19, 2013) and the Joe Bruno Group (April 26, 2013). The series, which was founded in 2001, showcases the region’s top jazz performers on Fridays, between 2 and 4 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. Tickets are $7 for Jazz Club members and $12 for non-members. A portion of ticket sales goes to the Jazz Club’s scholarship fund. The April series’ first concert, on Friday, April 5, 2 p.m., features pianist Tony Castellano, Jr. A third-generation jazz pianist and native of St. Petersburg, Castellano has enjoyed a long and illustrious career performing and touring with such greats as Ray Charles, John Lamb, Herbie Mann and Richie Cole. Castellano has recorded many critically acclaimed and genre-hopping CDs and his comedic flair and dexterity at the piano have earned him numerous awards across several states.
The series continues on Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m., with vocalist June Garber. A newcomer to the local jazz scene, Garber previously had a long and successful career in Canada that included theater, touring, movie and television work. One critic hailed her as being, “without doubt, Toronto’s most tasteful and elegant cabaret artist.” Her 2009 CD, “Here’s to You,” was a CBC Top 5 Jazz Pick and was one of the most played jazz albums on Canadian radio that year. Garber moved to Sarasota in September 2012 and, since then, has been taking the region by a storm with her full, rich tones, impressive high notes and singing that evolves clearly from the heart. Garber will be joined by Tom Ellison on sax, Billy Pilucere on bass, David Pruyn on drums, and Eddie Tobin on piano.
Next in the series is the Jerry Eckert Trio, Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m. Pianist Jerry Eckert is a frequent and popular presence at area jam sessions and concerts. Eckert will be accompanied by bassist Dave Hubbell, and drummer Rich McDonald for this concert, which also features vocalist Nancy Carmen.
The 2013 Jazz at Two series concludes with the Joe Bruno Group, Friday, April 26, 2 p.m. A fixture on the local music scene since 1991, the group features members of the multi-generational Bruno family of musicians. Trumpeter Joe Sr. has been playing professionally for over 70 years while his son, bassist Joe Jr., followed in the family footsteps and has been a professional musician since the seventies. Both are offspring of legendary New England bandleader Tony Bruno, who backed up such greats as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.
Dave Walrath, president of the Jazz Club of Sarasota, says that Jazz at Two fulfills the Jazz Club’s twofold mission to “showcase our region’s wealth of great jazz artists and to offer jazz enthusiasts opportunities to hear world-class jazz at an affordable price.”
