The wall along 143rd Avenue in Tampa’s University Area Community was covered in overgrowth with patches of mismatched paint where graffiti and gang tags had been painted over. More than 1,000 volunteers from businesses, government agencies, religious groups, service clubs and student organizations came together in January at the inaugural “Paint the Town” event. Volunteers took on projects such as painting, mowing, clearing debris and picking up garbage. The 4-square mile University Area Community is home to more than 30,000 at-risk and poverty-stricken residents. The event was coordinated by the University Area Community Development Corporation, Inc. and sponsored by PNC Bank. Photos courtesy Kerrick Williams Photography.
